nihonmachiROOTS is a group of progressive young leaders focusing on issues regarding San Francisco’s Japantown (nihonmachi in Japanese), including the redrafting of the Japantown Better Neighborhood Plan (BNP). This 20 year Plan will greatly affect the future of Japantown and will have a tremendous impact on our generation of youth and young adults.
Through the use of technology (www.japantownNOW.com) and community meetings, we hope to educate the community on the BNP and its potential impacts on the neighborhood and its people.
In addition, nihonmachiROOTS will promote the businesses of Japantown and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the community.
After World War II and Redevelopment during the 1960′s to 80′s, San Francisco’s Japantown shrunk in size, and most of its members moved to other parts of the Bay Area. We believe that the Japantown community thrives through not only its current residents and merchants but the many people who come to Japantown to meet, shop, eat, play, relax, celebrate.
It is nihonmachiROOTS‘ goal to connect and reconnect people with Japantown so that we can all enjoy this wonderful place for many years to come.

2) Represent interests and aspirations of young adults of the community;
3) Work with businesses, organizations, artists, and local merchants to contribute to the unique character of Japantown;
4) Help shape the Japantown Better Neighborhood Plan (BNP) and facilitate community input.
